Illegal Aliens May get Credit for Social Security

Save your Social Security- Please help convince your representative that a "Totalization Treaty" with Mexico would be unfair to all Americans and catastrophic for Social Security.

Update: TREA-Senior Citizens League has sent a letter to Rep. Michael "Mac" Collins (D-GA), declaring our formal support of H.Res.720, the resolution disapproving of the Social Security totalization agreement between the U.S. and Mexico. Congressman Collins is a member of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security.

As you may know, the U.S. currently has totalization agreements with approximately 20 other countries allowing workers to "total" the number of quarters needed to collect Social Security. Employers and employees need to pay only one set of Social Security taxes, rather than two, in their country of origin and the country where he or she is currently working.

However, this new agreement with Mexico may allow workers from that country to collect Social Security based on work performed while residing illegally in the United States. TSCL is concerned that this could place the Social Security trust fund in jeopardy since, according to GAO officials, the cost of a Mexican totalization agreement is largely unknown and granting credit for illegal work could add to that cost.

The only way to stop the U.S.-Mexican Totalization Treaty is for Congress to pass a resolution disapproving it. Congress has 60 session days to do this, after the White House submits the treaty to it.
