In the 1930s, '40s and most of the '50s, all the phone numbers in Tottenville (and other neighborhoods as far north as Princes Bay) began with ''TOttenville 8'' (Richmond Memorial Hospital's number, for example, was TOttenville 8-1900). In the late '50s it was changed to YUkon 4 (and the exchange area was extended up to Great Kills) and since then many other prefixes have been added.

Anyone here remember having a TOttenville 8 number? And if you do, chances are there will be a letter at the end; if there was one, it means that you were on a party line.
