It?’s that time of year to give criminals ?“the boot?” during National Night Out.
This year North Cliff residents will gather from 7 to 10 p.m. in the 700 block of Pierce to visit with one another, meet police officers and eat hot dogs and drink sodas. (The 700 block of Pierce, between Catherine Street and Brooklyn Avenue, will be blocked off.)
As in past years, hot dogs and sodas will be furnished by North Cliff Neighborhood Association. Residents are asked to bring covered dishes.
Last year?’s National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from 9,500 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, 32 million people participated last year.
National Night Out is designed to:
?• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
?• Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
?• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
?• Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Before leaving your house, turn your porch light on. This is a symbolic gesture that shows criminals we are united in our stand against crime. See ya Aug. 7.
