North Cliff Neighborhood Association

Aug. 6 meet neighbors, police and eat hot dogs

Jul 30, 2002

This year National Night Out is on Tuesday, Aug. 6 and everyone in the neighborhood is invited for free hot dogs, sodas, fellowship and fun.

North Cliff residents will gather from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the 700 block of Pierce to visit with one another, meet police officers, eat some food, parade their dogs and play games.

The 700 block of Pierce, between Catherine Street and Brooklyn Avenue, will be blocked off from vehicular traffic as it was last year.
Residents are asked to bring a side dish or a dessert.

Hot dogs will be served throughout the evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. An arts and crafts youth corner will be set up for most of the evening.

At 7 p.m., the second annual North Cliff Pooch Parade will feature the following categories:
?• Largest dog
?• Smallest dog
?• Best dressed
?• Owner-look-alike

First place winners will win $25 gift cards from PetsMart and second place winners will receive Eukanuba tote bags. Each entrant will receive a squeeze toy donated by PetsMart, as were all the pooch parade gifts.

Dogs must be on leashes and have current vaccinations.

At 7:30 p.m., the North Cliff Kids Patrol will unveil contests and games, including jump rope, a 3-legged race, tug-a-war and a peanut race. Youth will shovel for change and keep what they find. Face painting by local artists will also be on the menu for young and old alike. Prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded to the winners.
In addition to food, fun and fellowship, neighbors will meet police who patrol and protect our neighborhood. Councilwoman Elba Garcia will also be in attendance. Mayor Laura Miller was invited but declined saying the numerous National Night Out invitations she received prohibit her from attending.

Other federal and state representatives who have been invited include U.S. Representative Martin Frost, State Senator Royce West and State Representative Roberto Alonzo.

We encourage everyone who lives in North Cliff to attend the Aug. 6 National Night Out. Not only will we get the opportunity to meet one another but we?’ll also show criminals that we stand firm in our commitment to a safe, clean and secure neighborhood.
