Ten Ways to Be a Better Neighbor
There's a notable article in the Des Moines Press Citizen's October 23, 2002, issue, entitled "Great Neighbors are Good for the Kids", by Sam Carrell, Executive Director.
The article discusses "10 ways to become a better neighbor". Summarized, they are:
(1) talk to and get to know your neighbors - introduce your kids, give your phone numbers, let them know they can call you if they have concerns.
(2) Do a directory of houses on your neighborhood/street, including childrens' names, ages and parents' work numbers.
(3) Keep an eye out for kids in your block and let them know you're looking out for them.
(4) Say hello to teenagers on the street, preferably by name.
(5) Ask kids in your neighborhood if there are places where they don't feel safe. Stress open and honest discussion and work toward solution.
(6) Share ideas/concerns with other families; cooperate to prevent drinking parties in homes. Know names and phone numbers of your child's friends' parents.
(7) Be a coach or youth group leader and model good behavior in front of kids.
(8) Mentor a young family or kid.
(9) Create a neighborhood association to encourage people to get to know each other.
(10) Develop partnerships with your neighborhood schools.
