Sylvan Park Community Garden!

Posted in: Sylvan Park
Sylvan Park resident Cliff Cockerham has created an initiative for a community garden for Sylvan Park.

Cliff wants all the setup and management of this garden to come from the community. He is committed to involving the senior citizen's group that meets at Cohn Adult Learning Center and to providing a multi-cultural and teaching perspective.

He wants the teachers and children of Sylvan Park School to see the garden as a learning resource. Seniors may see it as a chance to pass on what they know to these students.

As Director of Financial Development for Scarritt-Bennett, and as someone with an impressive background in professorial/educational/cultural issues, Cliff has been able to secure a sizable grant from the Columbia/HCA Foundation, plus additional "seed money" (sorry, had to use that one) from the Sylvan Park Neighborhood Association.

Now it's up to us. If you're interested in becoming a part of this effort, come 30 minutes early (6:30p) to the next Sylvan Park Neighborhood Association meeting (listed under Community Events section of this web site).

One of the first issues facing the garden committee is where to locate the garden. Cliff has already committed that the seniors of Cohn Adult Learning Center will have at least part of the garden located at Cohn School, on the side of the school closest to 51st avenue, next to a small play area for children.

I'm lobbying for putting the garden at the left front part of McCabe Community Center (near the stone arches) or some other site where more Sylvan Park residents will be able to see it, enjoy it and know about it.

If you have an opinion, let us hear about it. Come to the meeting or at least respond here.

Thanks
