Thanks NWF for our new shade canopies. The new Quick Shade Weekender (one of two)in Hunter Green was used at our "booth" for the first time at the Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College this Saturday,October 22...the shade was most welcome on this hot Santa Ana day....this 12X12 structure was great for setup as we had the middle of the pathway and became a "walk through" presence with folks viewing both sides of the table/ display. Now we need some signage on the sides of the canopy for visibility as to who we are! Thanks, Connie (and Lew), Hester, Joe and Mort my booth mates for participating. We talked it up with lots of serious visitors!
We now have three complete display sets and 2 canopies and are seeking new longer display tables as well as canopy signage. Contact the Hosts for access to these display sets.

32ND STREET CANYON "NWF Habitat Steward Hester Gillespie is proud to pass on this update regarding the 32nd Street Canyon Restoration Project. As many of you know she volunteers her time and muscle (?) in the canyon pulling weeds, watering, planting, and "lecturing" to the school kids that pass through. You've probably even seen events listed on the website calendar! She wanted you all to know how things are progressing, and to give public thanks to Tershia d'Elgin for her ongoing committment and drive to keep the canyon in the public eye."
As you know this is the group I dedicate most of my "hours" to as the canyon is practically in my backyard.

Group dedicated to saving canyon is honored
Years of hard work by a group of neighborhood
activists determined to save the 32nd Street
Canyon in Golden Hill from urban encroachment
have been recognized by a U.S. senator.
Friends of 32nd Street Canyon are the recipients
of the Conservation Champion Award, presented
last month by Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. The
award program was inaugurated six years ago to
recognize individuals and organizations working
to promote a safe and healthy environment.
One of the canyon group's key successes was
persuading the San Diego Unified School District
to back away from building an elementary school
and playing field in the canyon.
In addition, the Friends group has secured nearly a half million dollars in grant money, much of which will be used to restore a stream bed that runs the length of the 12-acre canyon. It also has helped launch a ?“Kids in Canyons?”
environmental education program that is being
replicated in other city canyons.
?“Engaging neighbors of all ages in rebuilding
canyon habitats creates communities that care,?”
said Tershia d'Elgin, one of the canyon group's
leaders.

California now has over 5,000 certified
habitats....way to go California Stewards!
>>> Roxanne Paul 10/26/06 2:50 PM >>>
The last time I ran a state tally, I noticed that California (the state
with the most NWF-certified habitats) was closing in on 5,000 certified
habitats. I thought this was quite a milestone for a single state.
So, I just ran a query today to see if they had reached it, and they have 5,035 habitats certified with us!
Way to go California!!
