Safety Checklist

Safari Safety

If your group or class is preparing to visit a terrific outdoor place to learn and play, there are some things you should know to help keep everyone safe.

Wear sturdy shoes. They will help protect your feet. Do not wear open-toed shoes like sandals.

If you wear a uniform and you have the long pants, wear them rather than shorts. Long pants will keep the bugs away and do a better job of protecting you from poisonous animals or plants you may encounter.

If it's hot, bottled water is a great thing to have on the trail.

You can bring a snack on the trail, but they can be ant magnets. Make sure whatever you bring is well packaged.

And if you're going to bring snacks, you ought to bring a small trash bag. If you collect litter as you go, Mother Nature will be delighted!

What kind of equipment might be helpful? A butterfly net, a bug jar, a magnifying glass or hand lens? How about binoculars?

If your school has a video or still camera, who will be responsible for using it?

Important Reminders

Respect wild animals, no matter their size! Don't tease the monsters...especially if you don't know if they may bite or sting or have some kind of poison.

Treat the plants kindly too! The animals depend upon them for food and shelter. And the human visitors who will come after you would like to see a pretty place also.

If it looks dangerous, leave it alone!

Bring your curiosity. Leave your cares.

Take only memories. Leave only footprints.

Remember, there are plenty of places right in our own backyards where you can experience nature, a peaceful way to learn and play.
