FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 3/7/04
The Columbus Compact Corporation (the ?“Compact?”) recently learned that a company is doing business in the Empowerment Zone under a name that may mislead or confuse area residents. The name of the company is ?“EZ Acceptance?”, but it has nothing to do with the Compact or with the Empowerment Zone Rehabilitation Program.
The Empowerment Zone Rehabilitation Program is sponsored by the Compact and is paid for with a federal grant. It is available to residents of the Columbus Empowerment Zone, and it is administered on the Compact?’s behalf by MORPC (the Mid Ohio Regional Planning Commission). The Empowerment Zone Rehabilitation Program provides grants and low interest loans for home renovation costs to eligible homeowners in the Columbus Empowerment Zone.
EZ Acceptance, which is in no way connected to the Compact, the Columbus Empowerment Zone or any other government-sponsored program, is a for-profit company that sells home renovation and financing services. The Company, which also operates under the name Neighborhood Renovation Plan, is reported to be visiting area homes on a door-to-door basis to solicit business.
EZ Acceptance is based in Akron, Ohio. According the Akron Better Business Bureau website, the Bureau contacted EZ Acceptance in July of 2002 regarding a company flyer that was distributed in the Cleveland Area. The Bureau considered references in the flyer to be misleading because they could be mistaken for an official mailing from a government agency. EZ Acceptance revised the flyer after discussions with the Bureau.
If you have questions about the Empowerment Zone Rehabilitation Program, or if you have been contacted about home repairs by someone and you are not sure if they are associated with the program, please contact Lil Frazier from MORPC at 233-4171 or Adero Robinson from the Compact at 251-0926.
