The Office of Youth Services and Community Affairs (OYSCA) Neighborhood Relations unit is accepting applications from Memphis citizens for the 2009 Certified Neighborhood Leader Training Program. The program, which is slated to begin on February 25, 2009, is free of charge and will include five monthly workshops that are designed to help established and emerging neighborhood leaders create positive change and mobilize their neighborhoods. The overall goals of the program are to enhance the ability of citizens to seek resolutions and be the driving forces in determining the future for their neighborhoods.
Memphis?’ most vital asset is its citizens and City government recognizes that resident participation and input are essential to enhancing and sustaining the quality of life in neighborhoods. Therefore, it is critical for the City of Memphis to establish a vehicle to build upon and develop effective neighborhood leadership skills.
The objectives of the Certified Neighborhood Leadership Program are:
1. To build upon established neighborhood leaders?’ experience;
2. To assist and encourage emerging neighborhood leaders;
3. To broaden participants understanding of neighborhoods;
4. To encourage and assist in the establishment of networks among neighborhoods;
5. To encourage and enhance the ability of neighborhoods to seek resolutions and be the driving forces in determining the future of their communities;
6. To introduce participants to government, institutional and business resources.
The program, which is open to any citizen residing in Memphis can accommodate 35 participants. All classes except Orientation will be held from 5:30?—7:30 p.m. in OYSCA?’s Community Resource Room. Orientation will be held from 5:30?—6:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 at OYSCA.
Citizens can register by completing and returning the enclosed registration form to OYSCA by February 18, 2009. Participants must agree to attend at least four of the five classes to successfully complete the program.
