University District Problem Properties Task Force Meeting

Meeting Summary

Problem Properties List: Properties on Montrose, Lisbon and Winspear reported as party or loud houses. Inspector had information on these properties. Property on Lisbon reported as having tenants driving on grass?—inspector is aware of problem. Property on corner of Main &W. Northrup reported as site of graffiti and of drug deal. Brinton reported as site of four-wheeler activity & damage. Inspector thinks problem has been resolved.

Enforcement Updates: State Liquor Authority Enforcement Department will reportedly double in the near future. They will continue to be proactive regarding underage drinking crackdown. BPD will look at problem properties.

University Heights Collaborative Update: Four committees have been created: events, beautification, housing, main businesses. Joe Giambra said city will give trees to interested property owners to reforest area. The ?“Adopt-a-Street?” pilot program will begin on Heath Street and Joe Han will provide gardening training for Collaborative, PPTF & Heath St. residents on Tuesday April 25th 6:30pm at Gloria Parks. The Collaborative is also organizing a University Heights Street Sale to be held Saturday May 13th

Effects of Bar Closings: There has been a slight increase in house parties for the time
of year due to closings. Many students going to Elmwood Ave and the Chippewa District via buses that leave from North Campus.

PPTF 2005 Report: The PPTF 2005 Report highlights some of the successes of the group including a 40% reduction of 911 calls for loud noise and 45 property problems resolved. Please send comments on the work of the PPTF to Dr. Beal (beal@buffalo.edu) for the Report.

Crime and Safety Issues in the Heights: Fire in house on Tyler caused by faulty electrical wiring on 3rd floor attic. PPTF asked if UB can possibly do a Fire Safety reminder for off campus students. John Woods will check with Andrea Costantino. ?“No Turn on Red?” signs still missing from Winspear & Main.

Landlord Registry: Rental Registry is in full swing. Landlords who do not pay landlord licensing fee receive inspections officer visit to review violations.

Reporting Problem Properties: To report problems, contact the COPS Station (851-4112) or the Councilmember?’s office (851-5165) to complete a problem property form. Please also call the Mayor?’s Complaint line (851-4890) to ensure the problem is routed to Inspections and so that data are captured by the complaint line. Information will be forwarded to the proper authority for follow-up.
