Today is a beautiful spring Saturday outside. Unfortunately I am sitting here with a severe migrane because my neighbor has had her dog outside since 7:30 am...barking! She of course went to work and now he has been outside barking for 10 hours! I think this totally selfish, inconsiderate and not to mention inexcusable treatment of this poor animal. Does Delaware have any ordinances for nuisance noise like this that occurs all day long? I can not believe I am the only person bothered by this. I have had to call police several times last year when the dog was out late at night or early morning. That has stopped but now they have resorted to leaving the dog out all day. Sometimes when they are home with company the dog will be put outside and bark for 2-3 hours. I truly love animals but I do not relish being awakened before 6:30 am, or not being able to open my windows or sit on my porch. Is a little consideration for others asking too much? I would appreciate any solutions.

I agree with you. I have to admit however, I am more concerned for the treatment of this animal. I believe there are ordinances, i just don't know what they are. You may not get very far with the police, so I'd recommend calling the SPCA. If necessary, they will remove the dog from the home until the owner complies. I believe some hefty fines will be in order as well. I have to tell you..I live in a townhome backed up to the single family homes and the home behind me has a dog that slides through the fence and chases the people walking down the sidewalk and irritates everyone else's dogs that are outside...You can imagine my frustration when my 2 yr old and I are walking down the sidewalk and a strange dog comes running at us and barking....I am on the brink of calling the spca myself. |

Dog Barking Laws
There are laws for dogs barking too much. I believe if a dog barks constantly for 10 min. or off and on for 30 min. the dog owner can be fined. If it continues I believe there are stronger penalties (removal of dog, etc...). Call the New Castle County Police to find out the exact laws and regulations and then call them the next time the dog/s bark beyond normal limits. Eric |

I have to agree with you due to my husband and I also being victims to excessive barking dogs on three sides of our house and have wondered what can be done. We are animal lovers ourselves but feel that being awakened at early hours of the morning?….3:00 am, 6:00 am and especially during the weekend is a bit ridiculous. We have also experienced all three neighbors letting their dogs out to bark at each other at the same time quite annoying. We have wondered what can be done as well. Another question?….what can be done for dogs being allowed to run free in the neighborhood and conducting their business in others yard??? By Amie B |
