October 25th, we met at the Northern Hills Country Club parking lot. We had hired a bus to take us to the City Council meeting. The FAR 150 Update study was on the agenda, and our speakers were be ready voice our opposition. Many, Many thanks to the 30 plus people who gave us an afternoon to show our community strength.
We know it was a lot to ask people to get on a bus at noon, not knowing when the city council will bring up the topic of the FAR 150 study, or even IF the FAR 150 study would stay on the agenda, but that's the way this game is played, so we hired the bus to save everyone the expense of gas, parking, etc. The City Hall Adventure will be remembered by all.
Our speakers were Mike Gallagher, who spoke about the safety issues. Gail Cocanour gave a pilot't perspective. Penny Gillard spoke about home values, then Max Fraily talked about his concerns for the safety of his employees who will be in the cement plant that the planes will be flying over. John Penry spoke about DNL sound levels.
Our final speaker was Les Hobgood, who told the council they could easily ammend the recommendations before sending them to the FAA.
We had all planned on 5 minutes each, but when we got there, we found that the city limits each speaker to only THREE minutes, so we all made last minute changes to our speeches.
The city council voted to keep the FAR 150 as it now reads. They will let the FAA do their own discovery about the safety and health issues.
So, what this means is that we must make the FAA aware that Northern Hills will not take overflights. Call 207-3471 EVERY time a plane flies over your house and the noise is too loud.
These numbers are tallied, and a few calls now would mean a lot of calls in the future.
So, no action is planned until the summer of 2002, which seems like such a long time. But we will be here, ready to fight any time.
If you get a chance to watch the council meeting, on Cable channel 21, be sure to watch the speech by Phil Salemi, the Northwood Homeowner's Association President.
You do know that we are supposed to rue the day we inititiated this battle, don't you?
