Why we moved to the O?’Kane Park Area
by Jim Sapp
We moved from the Houston\Galveston area about two years ago. In searching for a home we liked the idea of a new home in a well-established neighborhood. That?’s what we found in the O?’Kane area, a new small subdivision in a 30+ year old community. Our small section, of 21 homes was built on a farm site that belonged to the Westervelt family. The resulting home selection has had many rewards for us including, but not limited to, the following - O?’Kane Park, large trees in the area, quiet neighborhood with great neighbors.
We have met many of the old time area residents and all of them are very friendly to us Texas transplants. Many have been in the area all of their lives. One lady, Janine, whose grandmother owned the farm land our home is on, provides historic information about the area. Another couple who has lived in the area for 35 years shares their fox watching spot with us most evenings. Another family shares area home development history with us. It?’s so interesting how the area developed with some of the homes dating from the 18th century.
In our little subdivision there?’s a wide range of ages from young newly wed couples, young couples with small children, single men, single women, couples with teenagers, to empty nesters (kids grown and gone) like ourselves. A few of us are retired like myself, however, my wife, Cathy, is still employed. There are business owners, government employees, an airline employee, high tech people, two writers, two doctors, a lawyer and an Indian chief, just kidding about the chief, but he is a Native American. There is also the usual mix of pets, with dogs and cats being the most common.
Another desirable thing about the area is the nearness to downtown Denver and the closeness to the foothills and mountains. We enjoy hiking the open spaces in western Jeffco.
