Oakland City/Lakewood Livable Centers Initiative

Finally, We're Getting Some Attention!

Thanks to MARTA and the City of Atlanta, our neighborhood is being studied for future economic development as part of a project called the Livable Center Initiative. For the last few months, city planners and consultants have been meeting with and collecting input from neighborhood residents about what they would like to see in and around the Oakland City MARTA station.

What's Happened So Far

During March and April, interested residents joined focus groups that studied a particular issue, such as transportation or housing. In May, during a series of facilitated sessions known as charrettes, residents from all affected neighborhoods looked at the study area and identified what type of development should take place.

The city and its consultants took the feedback and developed a plan that was presented to the community in late May. Those who attended the presentations prioritzed the development ideas, and the city made further changes. Of course, those representing Oakland City had high marks for the development of an apartment complex at the MARTA station, streetscaping along the railroad tracks, and the creation of a warehouse district along Murphy Avenue that would be similar to what's happening along Marietta Blvd near Georgia Tech.

What's Next

Until July 12, you can comment on the draft plan published by the City of Atlanta's Bureau of Planning. You can download the plan by following the link below, or you can go to City Hall to view a copy.
