The Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service (MCVS) has been assigned as the state's central resource to register, coordinate, and mobilize volunteers in the event that the Mississippi coast or barrier islands are affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Register with MCVS at www.mcvs.org to receive information about service opportunities.
All oil-contaminated materials will only be handled by trained, paid workers and not by volunteers. BP is providing training through PEC/Premier Safety Management. However, the BP training modules are of use primarily to individuals interested in employment and not volunteers.
MCVS encourages you to get involved in your local community. For the latest information concerning the Gulf Oil Spill, visit the official Deepwater Horizon Response website. Register online as a volunteer with the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service.
The Pascagoula River Audubon Center will organize training on cleaning wildlife affected by the oil spill. Volunteers may register their contact information at the center’s website.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency call center will answer questions from concerned residents regarding the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. You may contact the call center by calling 866-920-MEMA (6362).
