Birmingham News, Thursday, January 13, 2005 MARIE LEECH, News staff writer

An inspector who began visiting homes in Shelby County this week to verify that animals have been vaccinated for rabies has written 65 citations for fines in the first 200 visits.

Veterinarian James Green, the program's coordinator, said that number is mind-boggling. Pet owners had enough advance warning of the door-to-door inspections that the number of citations shouldn't have been that high, he said.

Officials said an inspector will hit every household in Shelby County over the next several months. The program began Monday. By Wednesday afternoon, the inspector had visited about 200 houses in Vincent, Sterrett, Chelsea and unincorporated Shelby County, said Becky Senicz, Shelby County's rabies officer. Senicz said the inspector has been going to different areas each day to catch pet owners off guard.
