Citywide Public Involvement

Posted in: Richmond
Please find attached a questionaire for your feedback on ideas relating to improving public involvement efforts by the City of Portland.

The City of Portland has organized a taskforce that will develop recommendations for City Council to consider citywide public involvement standards that affect how City bureaus provide outreach to the public on all major public project and policy initiatives, land use, and other neighborhood livability issues. Your input will assist the taskforce with prioritizing the types of issues to address. Commissioner's Jim Francesconi and Randy Leonard directed the Office of Neighborhood Involvement to organize this citywide dialogue that will include volunteer neighbors, community groups and City staff. Later in the process there will be sub-committees where we can utilize your help to draft recommendations.

The taskforce will look at:
* Reviewing best practices and current city and bureau policies around public involvement;
* Establishing recommendations for clear, consistent standards to meet the public expectation for public involvement practices across the City, and;
* Developing policy recommendations & public involvement standards for Council adoption.

1) If this task force could accomplish only one thing, what should it be?

2) In your experience, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the City of Portland's citizen participation process?

3) Can you name a City of Portland project you were involved with in which participation went especially well? Why do you think this was so?

4) Can you name a City of Portland project you were involved with in which participation did not go well? Why do you think this was so?

5) How would you like to participate in or be kept informed about the task force work? (i.e. simply kept informed or be on a subcommittee about a specific subject.)

On Tuesday, February 25 we held the initial event attended by over 80 people. I am transcribing the notes and will send them out shortly to those who request to be on the interest list. Please contact me if you wish to be on the distribution list for up-to-date information and meeting notes on this effort.
