Overland Neighborhood Association Minutes of 6/25/09

Present: Catherine Sandy (President), Kevin Dickson, James T. Sample, Steven & Glenda Edgar, Ray Ehrenstein, City Councilman Chris Nevitt, J.C. Haelmstaedter, Ronnie Crawford.

President Sandy called the meeting to order at 6:45pm at John Collins Church 2320 South Bannock, Denver.

Minutes from the last meeting recorded by Ray Ehrenstein were read by Secretary Charley Samson, then approved. Treasurer Roof was absent but President Sandy reported $1,077.31 in our account. After dues from Barb Poole ($5) and Charley Samson ($5), and Ronnie Crawford and cats ($10), the total was approved at $1097.31.

There has been no response to Kevin and J.C.??™s offer of garden plots. President Sandy mentioned possible scrap fence from Arbor Fence or Denver Urban Gardens.

Ray reported on a plan by ??œPoo-Free Parks,??? a start-up business promising ??œgreen-themed branding opportunities,??? i.e. biodegradable bags attached to signs with advertising. The Parks Advisory Board has already approved them. Ray then quoted former councilwoman Cathy Donahue??™s letter denouncing such ??œundemocratic behavior.??? She cited the City Charter provision prohibiting ads in city parks.

Nevitt said the plan hasn??™t yet come before City Council, but noted that ???permits are issued all the time??? by the Manager of Public Works. There apparently is a distinction between ??œevents??? and ??œprograms.??? Nevitt professed a preference for partnerships, like the Police Athletic League??™s deal with the Daniels Fund or the American Cancer Society??™s funding the gardens in the Ruby Hill master plan. He found two sources of objections, either on esthetic grounds or insufficient benefit to the City treasury.

Glenda Edgar gave an update on the meth house on her block owned by Shane Medlin. She told of foul-smelling willow bonfires, of ??œbike methangers,??? furniture dumping in the lot behind Bushwackers and her adventures with Neighborhood Inspection, the City Attorney and the Environmental Health Department and the Environmental Health Department. Nevitt, expressing the need for a ??œdirt bag??? (slum lord) law, suggested the District 4 Commanders Meeting as the probable best course.

We agreed to move the elections to the October meeting, which is the annual Pot Luck. After playing coy all night, Sandy finally caved to the withering pressure from all present, and agreed to stand for President again.

The Thriving Artists Alliance has expressed an interest in our neighborhood.
After some rude remarks about Kevin??™s T-shirt, a collector??™s item due to an unfortunate misspelling, the meeting was adjourned at 8:001pm.
