Pickerington Area Taxpayers Alliance

The PATA Analysis

Posted in: PATA
This analysis is prepared from the PATA Articles of Association and responses given by Lisa Ross in this Discussion Area about PATA.

PATA is an association that states their purposes as being; 1) to consult, review and make public comments on issues affecting Pickerington area taxpayers, 2) to encourage and provide a forum on these issues, and 3) to seek out and inspire local candidates to run for public office. These Articles of Association were adopted by member vote in January of 2000.

According to the Articles PATA has officers of Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary and any such officers as the membership may decide. These officers will not be identified unless the officer chooses to make the disclosure himself/herself. These officers are elected by the PATA membership at the first meeting of the calendar year. Members are like covered with the veil of privacy as they express a fear of reprisal upon themselves or their family members due to the nature of the relationships they have to the focus issues of city, township and school district that PATA attempts to address. Dues are collected of an undisclosed amount. No financial reports are made available for public display, SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY DON?’T HAVE TO!

Any individual paying taxes in Violet Township, Pickerington or the Pickerington Local School District may become a member. Please note that one already must not mind being affiliated with a membership that does not want its membership known. You will not know whom you will be working with, unless they decide to let you know by individual choice of each member. One also can?’t really prove they will be getting association service worthy of their dollars. You may never know the identity of their Treasurer.

PATA does not publish their minutes openly, as they are not required to do so. The officers do prepare an agenda for each meeting provided that any item placed on the agenda is a matter reasonably related to the purposes of PATA. The Secretary is required to prepare minutes of each meeting according to the Articles of Association. PATA claims to hold PUBLIC meetings as ?“issues dictate.?” They further announce these meetings in the local papers and on their website. Unfortunately, I have not seen any dates published.

PLEASE retrace a few steps and show some of us why PATA is really an organization we would desire to join? List when and where your meetings have been and what focus issues have been addressed. Please include future meetings in your Calendar Interactive Area. An agenda and copy of minutes would also be helpful, if posted on your website. Which officers have chosen to permit their identity to be known? Why should we want to COME TOGETHER with PATA? The above requested information would help us to decide.

Thank you for the forum to understand you better.

Thank you for your comments

Thank you for your inquiry and concern. Maybe our organization is not for you because of the constraints that some of our members feel necessary about their identity. Those constraints will not change because of the belief by some of harm to their families. I encourage you to make your own efforts to help us live in a better community and consult our site for information if you like.

I do not fear our methodology or members and I think if you look at what we post on the ''our pages'' section of the site you have nothing to fear too. I'm sure you will appreciate not having to dig through documents in the library or constantly making trips to City hall or the Township hall to get copies of the documents we post.

We will announce public meetings on the calender area and I encourage you to attend and see that we are normall everyday citizens just like yourself. Some of our members prefer to help in the backround and will not attend the public meetings, but will publish information and help with mailings etc. That is fine with us.

I do not think the issue of ''Who We Are'' is as important as the fact that we are trying to ask good questions and debating among ourselves and within the community. Better government will result whether you agree with us or not.
