Mr. Uher appears to have a problem responding to my charge. Let me give everyone some background. To attend a four-year college a student must take tests like the ACT and SAT. They also take additional tests upon entry into the university. These are placement tests to determine where and what classes the new student should start his or her college education. Now if your son or daughter can?’t get placed into one of these ?“actual?” college classes and get college credits they will be placed in a remedial class to get their skills up to a college level. Why is this significant? Well you must pay for these classes while your child gets basically no college credit. Many students here in Pickerington must then attend a junior college or community college like Columbus State. Here they get their grades and college skills up to a level so that they can compete with the other students attending real universities. Mr. Uher and the PLSD are trying to tell everyone that these kids are in Europe for the summer. Didn?’t we at one time say that about unwed mothers?
So let me make the charge one more time. ONLY 55% PERCENT OF THE PICKERINGTON HIGH SCHOOL GRADUTES ATTEND A FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE THE SAME YEAR THEY GRADUATE. I stand by that statement.
Mr. Uher, Groveport sends 65% of their students directly to four-year colleges. You can laugh all you want but this is not a laughing matter. You can re-phase your spin by dropping the ?“four-year?” part all you want but the facts still remain. The only way problems can ever be corrected are to be able recognize the problem. Mr. Uher wants to cover this one up.
Now on to the booster club thing and the school boundaries issue. Let me get this straight the new high school is scheduled to open in the fall of 2003. Almost two full school years away. Yet they have elected presidents to these two new athletic booster clubs. Booster clubs normally are made up of parents whose children attend the schools in question. Yet at this early date while the boundary committees are still meeting Mr. Uher and a select few (Athletic Boosters) know the boundaries of the new high school and which children will be attending these new schools.
Can we now label the boundaries committees a charade? Each little table in the room, with their own little controller directing the output of each table. The fact is there will be absolutely no public input to the boundaries unless you are an athletic booster.
Now relate that to the first half of my comments. Pickerington is going to graduate a bunch of dumb jocks and that is what we will be known for. Your children will not get a proper education unless they have some kind of athletic skill. The three board candidates that were supported by the athletic boosters all stated they had no problem with uncontrolled growth. Uncontrolled residential growth is great for building strong sports programs however it causes real problems with finding and keeping great math, English and science teachers.
