Echoing Ms. Ross?’ sentiments here I would like to thank you for writing your letters to the editors. They are definitely having an impact. Regarding your letter in the SE Messenger, Nov. 26, did you know that the total property required for the new police station is around 4 acres? Did you also know that there is a property available at the actual crossroads of our City? The old Countryside Hardware property is for sale. For those of you that don?’t know, it is located at SR256 and Refugee Road. It is 4.2 acres. It has a building on it not much different in size than to proposed police department. In addition, there is ample property left for parking.
Did you ever wonder what the impact on the community would be if we purchased the hardware site, tore it down and built the police station there? Why, believe it or not, there is already City water and sewer available at the site, evidenced by the fact that there is a car wash there, too. Did you also know that there would be no need to construct a $150,000 road to get to it? We wouldn?’t have to waive any costs of water and sewer for BGM development if the station was located at that site? Do you know that no emergency legislation would be required to locate at that site?
I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth as much as the next guy, and who wouldn?’t appreciate Mr. Berry?’s generous contribution to the community? But also think about who couldn?’t appreciate locating the police department at our crossroads? We have a lot of pride in our police and why not put them in a place for all to see? Why stick them down at the very limit of the City where they are surrounded by the City of Columbus? Why not place them in the heart of Pickerington?
But then again, why ask why? Does the police department have a say in such things? Do the citizens?
