School Boundary Committee

Posted in: PATA
I hope that in opening up this old can of worms I will not resurrect Mark Uher?¡?¦s involvement in this forum. I truly hope that because I wouldn?¡?¦t forgive myself.

Last I heard, at the third meeting of the School Boundary Committee, maps with the boundary lines were circulated. Outraged as I was to hear this, it wasn?¡?¦t unexpected, considering the parties involved in circulating them. I understand that the maps had boundary lines drawn on them and that except for the Park Place/Tussing area, all the lines ran the same course. I also understand that the explanation of the circulators of THEIR decision on where the boundary lines were placed was based on an even balance of students in each of the Junior and Senior High Schools. I also heard that the very night that the maps were introduced, information was handed out by PLSD showing growth projections.

So in other words, no consideration was given to growth, only current populations. No reason was given but it doesn?¡?¦t take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Future growth, overcrowding and portables be damned, we have to maintain two Division 1 schools.

?„h Doesn?¡?¦t anyone think it?¡?¦s time to look at the overall populations and the boundaries of ALL of our schools?
?„h Shouldn?¡?¦t we take some time to think about how our children enter the school system and how they flow through it?
?„h Shouldn?¡?¦t more teachers be involved in the process instead of them being a victim of it?
?„h Shouldn?¡?¦t a more objective and more unbiased panel be established to most effectively plot the course of our children through the educational waters?
?„h Shouldn?¡?¦t we look to seek the assistance of a different company to facilitate the process? One who doesn?¡?¦t have such a long and intimate relationship with the ?¡?§inner circle?¡?¨ of business as usual in the PLSD?
?„h We have the time. We have the talent in the District. We have the information we need. Shouldn?¡?¦t we do it right ?¡V the first time?

I appeal to the School Board and I appeal to the community. We have a voice. The Boundary Committee is open to all residents of the District. The meeting dates are published in the PATA Newsletter found elsewhere in this site. Don?¡?¦t let people who want to steer the process for personal gain call the shots for your kids. Get involved and question everything. If you can?¡?¦t attend these meetings, write letters to your School Board and the PLSD Administration. Their addresses are available elsewhere in this site. Write in this forum. Issues in these discussion boards have been forwarded to community officials in the past and they were answered. You literally don?¡?¦t have to leave the seat your sitting in right now reading this to begin to make a difference.

We have enough rubber stamping politics in Pickerington. Don?¡?¦t let our kid?¡?¦s future be just another rubber stamp political process.

Dare to make a difference!

Expectations for 2002

Maverick,

If you don?’t want me to reply to your point of view, then please leave my name out of your posting. Thank you.

I am very hopeful that 2002 will be a great year for our school district. I support the election of Wes Monhollen and Gail Oakes 100%. Both are excellent business persons but with different policy perspectives. They need all of our support for their noble efforts to get our board operating as a team.

For them to operate as a team, I believe that all ?– Gail, Bruce, Lori, Larry and Forest ?– must change. We all ?– including me ?– must try to put the divisive election of 2000 behind us and try to heal the deep, deep wounds resulting from Issue 14.

We all need to be a bit more civil in our expressing our opinions about issues and elected officials. Particularly as we approach the very difficult process of dividing our school district equally, we want to be very mindful that we still are one community.

As we begin to debate the boundary committee?’s recommendations, I encourage all to be very respectful to others in our community and mindful that are different opinions.

Happy New Year to you, Maverick, and all readers of the PATA website.
Credible

Webster?’s New Collegiate Dictionary defines Credible, ?“Worthy of Belief?”. My dictionary was printed in 1945. Maybe those words have changed meaning since then.Maybe there is another Mark W.Uher.Maybe it is his evil twin.

Respectful

Dr. Pepper,

No, I do not have a twin.

Does your Webster?’s New Collegiate Dictionary have definitions for the words respectful, change and neighborly too?
