Maximum Class Size Increases for High School Science

The State Board of Education voted to permit science classes in grades 9-12 to have a maximum class size of 30, as long as the system average class size does not exceed 28. Last year, the maximum class size for high school science was 28.

For the past 2 years, the General Assembly has approved the use of system average class sizes as a cost-saving measure during the budget crisis. Unless this language is extended during the next session, the grade 9-12 maximum class size for science will return to 28 in the 2005-2006 school year.

The maximum class size for English, Math, Social Studies, and Foreign Language in grades 9-12 is 32; the system average is 30.
