Top 10 Alternative Legacies of the Morial Administration

May 08, 2002

There will undoubtedly be many attempts at providing us with ?“remembrances?” (Clintonesque term for revisionist history) of all of the greatness of the current mayoral administration. These are a few of the ?“legacies?” that probably won?’t be on the list.

10. Loss of thousands of residents from the City and New Orleans being only major Southern City to lose population in 1990s.
9. Loss of thousands of high paying jobs for engineers, accountants, geologists, and support personnel in oil operations and replacement of those high paying jobs with hundreds, er, tens of low paying jobs at bankrupt Jazzland.
8. Regional dictatorship at the Airport
7. Virtually nothing done to improve blighted housing
6. Use of Meter Maids as an economic development tool.
5. Streets that resemble pot-holed trails (Kabel, Berkley, and Holiday, to name just a few), while 1995 bond money goes unspent.
4. Patronage everywhere you want to go (via bus at the RTA or plane at the Airport).
3. DBE millionaires
2. Gun lawsuits

And the number one alternative legacy item that is least likely to make the Mayor?’s list:

1. 3T: $1.3 million spent and still 61% Against it.

Question of the day: If everything in the Morial administration was so good, why is it that for the first time in many, many years is there an honest feeling of hope among all New Orleanians and a belief that the City may be on the verge of one of history?’s great renaissances?
