Perkerson is one of those unique neighborhoods that has a history that stretches back to around 1833 when settlers came from South Carolina to Georgia due to the Georgia Land Grant Lottery. It was a farming community, and the homes that developed had pretty big lots. The Perkerson Park neighborhood as it is officially called on maps (we drop the park to keep from confusing people with the actual Perkerson Park which is not in the neighborhood but down the street) and the Sylvan Hills neighborhood developed out of the holdings of Thomas Perkerson and Jeremiah Gilbert estates. That's just a little history for you.
The advent of the highway system being built in the 1950's led to the building of suburban style new brick ranch homes on the land that came to make up the Perkerson neighborhood. So we have a neighborhood that is literally 10 minutes from downtown Atlanta and 10 minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport and surrounded by a network of freeway systems: I-75/85 both North and South and Highway 166 which leads to I-285 and I-20. Therefore, the neighborhood provide a transportation access that does not happen anywhere else in Atlanta.
Metropolitan Parkway is a Georgia State Route Roadway that is named Dogwood in Hapeville, Georgia and extends on down into Atlanta where you pass through the neighborhoods of Hammond Park, Perkerson, Sylvan Hills, Adair Park, Mechanicsville and the street deadends into Northside Drive in the West End neighborhood.
So the Perkerson neighborhood literally has street boundaries with East Point, Georgia and Jefferson Park, Sylvan Hills and Hammond Park in Southwest Atlanta. The Wikipedia Encyclopedia is another source of information on the neighborhoods and areas surrounding the Perkerson neighborhood.
