Honeybees play such an important role in our world. Not only do they provide us with honey, which is a wonder food unto itself, but they also have a huge role in pollination of flowers and plants. Honeybees are often rented just for pollination purposes by commercial farmers.
Unfortunately, the number of honeybees in our area has steadily declined. Many beekeepers lost their colonies to the trachea and varoa mites. The newest threat to the honeybee is the small hive beetle. What we need in Pickens county is for more people to learn about beekeeping, and how to care for the honeybees. Are you interested?
The Pickens County Beekeepers Association holds meetings on the second Thursday of the month from January through November. The meetings are held at the Farm Bureau Insurance Office on Hwy 178 just outside the city of Pickens. Membership is an affordable $10.00 per year, but are welcome to come and visit us for free!
