Happy 02! Just thought the Richmond N.A. should know it's losing one of its
beloved murals. If you or any of your volunteers are interested in working
on this, let me know. During that time it would be useful to contact Joe Cotter at 630-5176, chameleons_garden@yahoo.com or Maureen Newby, Metro Murals President, at mnewby@w-link.net (she lives in Seattle.)
Call me if you want to know more.

Hi Everyone, I received word yesterday that this mural is being removed by the new business moving in. They didn't want to remove the mural but couldn't get around it. They are going to try to leave a portion of it standing.
In talking with Joe Cotter and Maureen Newby, both agree that this might be a very concrete moment for making our case with OPDR and the city for changing the ordinance in favor of preservation of murals.
This 480' of space is grandfathered in, however, since the wall it's on is disappearing, the space is not retrievable given the current ordinance.
We could make a case that since mural space in Portland is finite and vulnerable in ways that advertising is not, that we should be allowed to
hold onto this footage and paint the same size mural somewhere else. This
is one thought.
Maureen reminded me that this was one of our reasons for doing the registry of murals. She suggests we go back and tally up footage from '98 when the ordinance went in till now, and see how much has disappeared permanently.
I'd like to get feedback from folks. Are you interested in using this
moment to make a wave two? I think it is important for several reasons, one
of which is that it will put us and community murals back on the media map.
It will mean making a few phone calls.
If so please let me know as soon as possible.
