I'm hoping that some of your organizations have contacts in Portland Public Schools that you might be willing to share for an important cause.
I am involved with an all-volunteer group called Portland Parents for Alternatives to Pesticides (PPAP) and last spring, the Portland Schools Board adopted a new policy that they would reduce, and eliminate ''whenever possible'' ths use of pesticides on school grounds. Given the mounting evidence of the dangers of pesticides, especially to kids who are more vulnerable to their adverse effects, it might be safer to ban on use of pesticides in the future, but this is a good step forward.
Part of the policy that was adopted allows for individual schools to declare themselves ''pesticide free'' and some schools had already done this on their own prior to this policy. PPAP is interested in disseminating information to schools in the district and rather than cold-calling schools, we're hoping to identify by name some people within the schools who might be interested in this information. So, we are seeking names of teachers, principals, janitors, etc. to contact for the following reasons:
* to let them know that there is a new policy regarding pesticides.
* to make sure they're aware that they have the option to become pesticide free, and to help them better understand what that means and how to do it.
* to help ensure that anyone who uses pesticides in schools knows that there is a new requirement that notices must be posted before and after pesticide use so students and parents are aware that toxic substances are on the premises and they can act accordingly.
