  • Respect-O-Meter: Valued Neighbor
During a recent Saturday walk through the neighborhood, I happened to cross Cleveland Field (at 33rd-34th & Powell). Upon entering the field, I happened to note the large sign placed at the entrance by the Portland Public School District. Upon exiting the field on the other side, I noted an even larger sign by the District. Both of these signs made it eminently clear that dogs were to be ON A LEASH and that owners were to obey scoop laws.
While crossing the field, in both directions, I noted that there were anywhere between 8 to 10 dogs...yet, NOT A ONE WAS ON A LEASH.

I thought this neighborhood, through its neighborhood association, went through considerable contortions and made multiple promises to keep the field open to neighborhood users OF ALL KINDS upon the condition that dog owners would FOLLOW THE RULES. It seems that most of the dog owners who take their dog to the field have decided that they do not give a damn what others in the neighborhood think, or how they use the field, they are determined to have the field closed to all neighborhood use.

Do we need to start literacy classes in Richmond for dog owners? Why cannot dog owners police themselves? I am tired of this crap...literally.

The next time I go for a stroll and see large numbers of dogs running free on Cleveland Field, I'll contact the school district and point out to them that the field is being misused.

Irresponsible dog owners will be responsible for closing one of the largest open spaces for recreation in Richmond neighborhood.
