PAWTUCKET – City public safety officials announced a local shelter for people displaced by Hurricane Irene will be opened at Jenks Junior High School, 350 Division St., beginning at 6 p.m. today, Saturday, Aug. 27. The school is located across the street from McCoy Stadium.
Food, medical, and other necessities will be available. Anyone coming to the shelter is asked to bring their own blankets and pillows if possible. No domestic pets will be allowed. Fire and police officers are assigned to assure security. City emergency personnel will provide staffing. Police will use bullhorns to advise residents in mobile home parks of the Jenks shelter.
The city has also ordered a parking ban to take effect at Saturday midnight, ordered businesses to be closed by 8 a.m. Sunday, closed all recreation and parks facilities, made sand and sandbags available to the public at the city garage, increased available rescue personnel for the storm and delayed trash pickup one day.

With downed trees and power lines and heavy rains expected, residents are cautioned to stay well clear of any downed wires and any puddles or metal objects such as wire mesh fences that could conduct electricity and cause injury.
Fire Chief William Sisson, acting Emergency Management Director, noted emergency response may be delayed or slowed by high winds, heavy rains, blowing debris and other storm-related hazards affecting safety of public safety personnel and the public.
Residents are asked to use texting and social media to maintain contact with friends and family and lighten the load on cell phone and other networks to reduce risk of system overloads.
