The Rhode Island Medical
Society (RIMS) is hosting a series of strategy planning sessions to take place
over four meetings in 2011.

The sessions will explore and prioritize CDC best practice strategies to
reduce the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages in Rhode Islanders. As you
likely know, SSBs are a major contributor to obesity.

Possible strategies include the following:
  • ensure access to potable water
  • limit access to SSBs
  • limit marketing and minimize marketing's impact on children
  • pricing strategies
  • screening and counseling around SSBs as part of routine medical
    care
The meetings will be facilitated by M+R Strategic Services, who will
provide infrastructure support and strategy as RIMS begins to build and execute
a campaign for 2012.

RI DOH staff will also be present to provide information on their SSB media
and educational campaign, slated to kick off in mid-October.

All meetings are scheduled to run from 8:30 am - 9:30 am.
