In its role as a Housing Resource Center (HRC), RCC operates as a delegate agency of the Chicago Department of Housing under a federal grant program. HRC's work toward the creation and preservation of affordable housing in the communities they serve.
RCC works primarily to identify problematic multi-unit buildings and promote their rehabilitation or sale. RCC also distributes information on housing resources and makes referrals to the various assistance programs available throught the Chicago Department of Housing. RCC serves tenants, owners and the general community.
RCC's most frequently used program is the Affordable Housing Search. Clients can call the RCC office (773-583-1600) and request on-line searches for rental housing city-wide. Just specify what size of apartment you need, where you would like to live, and how much you can afford to pay. A staff person will search on-line databases for apartment rental listings and call you back with leads.
Another popular program is problem building advocacy. Tenants and neighbors can call RCC and report serious code violations, safety hazards, illegal construction activity, landlord/tenant disputes and more. Staff will investigate the situation and initiate a corrective action plan that may include contacting the owner, providing tenant or owner advice, arranging for landlord training, requesting building inspections, alerting police to gang or drug activity, attending housing court hearings and other ways to resolve problems in the building.
Other useful city programs include affordable home ownership, emergency housing assistance, homeownership counseling, and free home repairs for seniors and the disabled.
