Got E-Waste to Recycle or Paper to Shred?
 ewaste

Recycle your unwanted computer & electronic equipment and shred your waste paper on-site for a healthier planet!

Serve Rhode Island & Rebuilding Together are sponsoring an
E-Waste & Paper Shredding Recycling Drive at the

RI Community Food Bank,
200 Niantic Avenue, Providence,
Saturday, April 24, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Serve Rhode Island and Rebuilding Together are working with Cartridge World (Office Recycling Solutions) and Affordable Shredding to host a computer and electronics collection and document shredding event on Saturday, April 24th

The collection will be from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at 200 Niantic Avenue, Providence, RI 02907.

A minimum $0.20 cents per pound will be collected for all electronic items. Document shredding will be at $0.35 per pound. This simple action will keep electronics out of the regular trash, cut communities' dumping costs and raise money for a good cause!

Most people do not realize that old electronic items are technically "hazardous waste". Computer monitors contain several harmful substances, including mercury and lead. All computer components can be broken down and recycled properly. There's a certain monetary value and an even greater environmental value.

In order to help with the concern for identity theft, the organization has decided to offer sensitive document shredding services for $0.35 per pound. There will be a mobile shredding truck at the event.

E-waste items will be collected for the 20 cents per pound donation. Microwaves and de-humidifiers will be collected for an additional $15 per item. (Please, no alkaline batteries.) White goods and toaster ovens along with electrical items such as irons, vacuum cleaners, toys and dust busters, etc. will be accepted. CPUs/computers, TVs, servers, keyboards, spare computer parts, monitors, laptops, network equipment, mice, laser printers, routers, radios, scanners, fax machines, UPSs, cables and wires, aluminum, copper, cell phones, inks/laser cartridges and telephones are all accepted for the 20 cents per pound donation.

Why is it especially important to recycle electronic waste?

"Electronic waste is defined as all secondary computers, entertainment device electronics, mobile phones, and other items.  Electronic waste is of concern largely due to the toxicity and carcinogenicity of some of its substances, if processed improperly. Toxic substances in electronic waste may include lead, mercury, and cadmium. Carcinogenic substances in electronic waste may include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Capacitors, transformers, and wires insulated with or components coated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), manufactured before 1977, often contain dangerous amounts of PCBs. The unsustainability of discarding electronics and computer technology is another reason to recycle or to reuse electronic waste."(Wikipedia)

Please tell your neighbors, friends and office colleagues about Saturday's opportunity to get rid of old e-waste. You don't even have to get out of your car -- we'll do the lifting.
