My name is Kenneth Carpenter I am president of the Red Oak Civic Association and I would like to both congratulate and thank you for a job that is being done-well! In past dealings with your predecessor our association had written several letters and made numerous phone calls never to hear from him but only to be referred to a Sergeant Little and others of Community Policing that works with communities providing policing type service to civic associations. Sargent Little has been most helpful but has been transferred to District 2 and District 2 is lucky to have her in their district. Sargent Little has done an excellent job, however I feel that she is limited because she does not have the hands-on opportunity that you have as being in charge of district 3.
Before you arrived on the job our association had complained for years regarding a Daiquiri establishment on North Sherwood Forest Boulevard. Ms. Tassin our Councilwoman was called on many occasions at the time of the disturbances of the daiquiri shop, many times around midnight. Ms. Tassin our Councilwoman then arranged a meeting with you, a Mr. Bobby Callender of the ABC board and myself and several members of our association. From that one meeting that problem has been resolved by follow-up from both District 3 and Mr. Bobby Callender of the ABC Board. I know Mr. Callender made a special effort to visit the owner and discuss the serious effects these events could have on his liquor licenses. There were certain times of night and on certain nights that these disturbances would occur and members of our association have noticed patrol car from district 3 in the area at these specific times thus eliminating this ongoing two and half-year (21/2 yr.) problems. It is refreshing to see several groups communicating and cooperating to resolve neighborhood problems.
I had called the previous Capt. of district 3 on many occasions (about 15) and I had never heard his voice. I've called District 3 on four different occasions and have spoken with you each time. Your manner and professionalism should be an example to other departments and districts of our Police Department. When dealing with others such as Auto Theft and Narcotics it seems that these people are on some type of power trip and have forgotten they are servants of the community being paid by the taxpayers. I might add that all officers should remember that they are in the process of asking their community for a raise. I agree it is a much deserved raise however people's judgments seem to be clouded by acts of rudeness and being talked down to by those in authority thus effecting their pocketbooks. My hat is off to you for you or giving the citizens realization and hope, knowing that procedures can be done not only with the efficiency but also with a courtesy that unites the Police Department and the community.
Respectfully yours,
Kenneth Carpenter
