Neighborhood Safety

Posted in: Redland Woods
In the September newsletter, there was an article on neighborhood safety. One of the most dangerous areas in our neighborhood is on Gold Canyon street in front of the park. With the cars parked near the park and the bushes in the medians, there is minimal visibility if a child darts across the street.
This is not a new issue -- we have requested that speed bumps be placed near the park, but the Board has reported that speed bumps cannot be placed on a 4-lane road (Gold Canyon is a 4-lane road).
Thus, I see one of two solutions to improve safety of the children. My preference would be that the board take up a petition, work with the District Council and state offices, and REALLY try to push to get Gold Canyon changed to a 2-lane road. The upcoming Neighborhood Picnic would be a good opportunity to launch the petition. If Gold Canyon must remain as a 4-lane road, then no-parking signs need to be placed on both sides of the road in front of the park. No parking at the park may be a disconvenience, but that is better than a child getting hit by a car.
