Community Board 6 -Notes on Rego Park

Community Board 6 -Notes on Rego Park

It was a long meeting this time! Almost 2 hours! Don't worry, the
next Rego Park Group meeting (on the 22nd at the library!) will be
very short and to the point :)

The MTA was there, discussing their plans to make the subway
stations (starting with Union Turnpike Kew Gardens) accessible with
elevators. The elevator will fit one person in a wheelchair and one
standing person. (2 people). I almost got up and said "What if 2
people in scooters want to travel together?!" But I had a headache,
so I didn't. You know me, I think of everyone :) Their presentation
and slides were mostly geared to Kew Gardens, their mistake because
thats where the community board meetings are.. But then a few people
talked about the 71st Continental stop and Joe Hennessy Chairman of
the Community Board 6 mentioned all the seniors in Forest Hills and
Rego Park that they need an elevator too. It was mentioned briefly
that with the new Retail/Residential space in the parking lot on
Junction & 62nd, they might put one there, depending on the
developer, who has been cooperative. (More on that from me in the
future). They will continue to add elevators in stations as budget allows. Assemblyman Hevesi mentioned that it was almost $800,000 for FH.

The Transportation Committee mostly spoke about the area around
Alderton/62nd/Woodhaven and the 2 way street. Someone who lives
there put in a proposal to the community board to request changing
it from a 2 way street into a one way. They are going to do further
research about the logistics and traffic there. Someone said
sometimes the solution is worse than the problem. What they will
probably do in the meantime is put a no left turn sign there on
Woodhaven and Alderton where everyone makes a left to bypass the
traffic to get to 63rd Drive.

The only restuarants that notified CB6 that they have either applied
for or renewed a liquor license are:
Columbia Chicken Restuarant Inc- 94-19 63rd Dr
Karay Restuarant Corp 63-68 Austin Street

The Representative for NYC Comptroller William Thompson Jr spoke for
a few minutes about some updates they were doing and about the STAR
program (NYS Enhanced School Tax Relief) and that everyone should
visit the website at http://www.nyc.gov/star and also to sign up for
the comprollers email list. Send a email to
Information@comptroller.nyc.gov
She also mentioned that she might attend our next meeting to say a
few words (March 22nd!)

I spoke to a few journalists about our Graffiti Art and Writing
contest we are currently endorsing as a affiliate of CAGE-Citizens
Against Graffiti Everywhere. The Graffiti situation is getting worse
in Rego Park, and we need to all work hard at spotting, reporting
and/or removing it. We will discuss that on March 22nd.

I told them all about our next meeting on March 22nd (at the
library!)

It's important that you all come to the meeting!
