Dear Friends:
How are you?! I apologize for my recent disappearance, life and my new job (which I love) have taken up more of my time than I actually have.
I am asking for your help and maybe in a small but concrete way, we can make a difference.
Last night my family and I (yes, the 3 kids AND x) dropped off jackets, sweatshirts and blankets at a nearby shelter. This is a place where I spend a good amount of time in my new job training consumers and case managers about housing search and retention. The bags were pretty much empty before we left.
Before I started going into the shelters, I really didn't know what I would find. What I did find scared and saddened me. I found people just like me, families just like mine, who for one reason or another, ended up homeless. It could be an accident, a missed check, a lay off, a landlord that wanted or needed more money....whatever the reason, I realized very quickly that it could very well be me and mine.
If you have jackets, blankets, sweatshirts or sweaters in good condition (if you won't wear it because it has holes or missing buttons or broken zippers, it won't keep someone else warm) I am willing to take them to the source. Last but not least, and I would not have thought this, stuffed animals are a big hit, (A BIG THANKS TO PHIL AND HIS FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!) not just with children, but with moms. Also, I heard a child ask for a dictionary to do homework. Not something you'd think of, huh? (that ought to make you happy Richard!) I'm not asking you to spend money, but if these are things you have around the house, it'd be great.
Anything you can do would be awesome. I can't pick them up, but you can drop them at my house, or if I'm not home, even on my wonderful little porch that I treasure more than ever, and I will get them where they need to go.
You're welcome to pass this on to your good friends.
