Granville T. Woods (1856-1910) was a prolific African American inventor from Columbus, Ohio who held over 150 patents for a wide variety of innovative devices. Known for his work with electricty, he invented an improved telephone transmitter, a train-to-train telegraph, a commercial electric egg incubator, an overhead street car conducting system, and a third-rail subway track system still in use today. He also developed the famous train automatic brake later sold to Westinghouse.
