Springs woman dies in crash similar to cross-over accident that killed 7

By Debra Franco/The Gazette

A 23-year-old Colorado Springs woman died in a traffic accident Friday night after a car careened across the median on Interstate 25 near Baptist Road.

The accident occurred in the same area as a similar cross-over crash in February that killed seven people.

Angie K. Morgan was driving her 1993 Geo Metro south on I-25 about 10:40 p.m. Friday when a 1997 Honda Civic in the north lanes ran off the left side of the road and swerved across the median, said the Colorado State Patrol.

Morgan suffered massive head and chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. It was unknown if she was wearing a seat belt.

The Honda's driver, Tricia A. Hoit, 29, of Denver, suffered internal injuries. She was in stable condition Saturday at Penrose Hospital.

Friday's crash was about five miles from the spot of the February crash that killed seven people.

In that crash, investigators determined a blown tire caused a 1984 Dodge van to careen out of control.

The van crashed into a northbound 1997 Toyota extended-cab pickup truck carrying a family of seven.

Five people in the pickup, including a baby, were killed. Two people in the van died.

That accident, one of the deadliest in Colorado history, created an outcry for the state to install barriers along the 62-foot-wide grassy interstate median in the area.

Earlier this month, the Colorado Department of Transportation said some type of barrier would be installed, but work has not begun on the project.
