In partnership with Boy Scouts of America, the Explorer Program provides young men and women the opportunity to study first-hand the field of law enforcement and community service. The Explorer Program is a career development program, which emphasizes academic study, character development and self-discipline. Explorers also assist police and city personnel at functions where they may be called upon for a variety of tasks, such as distributing information, fingerprinting children, or assisting in searches of missing children, just to name a few. Overview of Explorer Selection Process:
• Be between 14 and 21 and have completed the 8th grade.
• Bring proof of a C average or better in school.
• Be free of felony arrests, current drug or alcohol use, and criminal activity.
• Attend three general meetings.
• Submit required application forms and pass an oral interview and background check.
• Complete a six-month probation period that includes written work and tests.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM The After School Program is offered at Jerome, Memorial, Salgado, Santa Anita, Logan, and Sandpointe recreation centers, as well as Portola Park, Wilson Elementary School, and the Triangle neighborhood. CHESS CLUBS
Chess Clubs operate at Jerome, Memorial, and Salgado recreation centers. Each center hosts a practice tournament, which allows players to hone their skills before entering the citywide chess tournament. The citywide tournament matches players in age and skill divisions. MCFADDEN LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER
McFadden Learning and Technology Center offers assistance for students with computer based projects and homework. There are also academic achievement activities, a variety of computer training classes and workshops, open access time with staff support for youth and their families. YOUTH SPORTS
The City of Santa Ana Youth Sports Program is for children in grades 1 through 8. The fee is $12 per sport and includes a team shirt,
participation trophy and a nine-week season. Most teams practice twice a week and play one game each Saturday. In season children can participate in Rookie Ball Baseball, Flag Football, Basketball, Track and Field, and Cross Country. An emphasis is placed on ensuring that every child has an equal opportunity to play, to develop skills, and to be recognized for effort and participation.

AQUATICS
The Santa Ana Aquatics Program offers a full range of aquatics activities for all ages including Recreation Swim at five city pools from Memorial Day through Labor Day for all ages, Swim lessons for children and adults, Junior Lifeguard Program with training in Basic Water Safety, CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard skills for children 11 years and older, Aqua Aerobics classes designed to provide a workout that addresses the specific fitness and health needs of adults and seniors, Swim Teams and Water Polo Teams which meet regularly for practice and competition in local and regional aqua games, Annual Water Olympics which combines a water polo championship game and a swim meet.
