Auto Thefts in Response Area One of the North Tryon Division

We have seen a number of auto thefts in response area one of the North Tryon Division during the past week or so.  This area of our division roughly stretches from  Plaza Road at Sugar Creek out to Milton Road to Harris Road. Eight (8) vehicles were stolen from 8-18-2008 through 8-24-2008.  This is a slight increase for the past several weeks and we wanted to make everyone aware of it.  We have noticed that these auto theft theives are targeting Dodge vehicles lately, as 5 of the 8 were of this make.  The theives seem to have a preference for stealing different models of vans as well.  Apartment complex parking lots have been where most of the crimes have occurred.

There are several things that citizens can do to make their vehicles a harder target for theft.  We highly recommend using some sort of steering wheel anti theft device, such as "The Club".  The devices are relatively cheap and may make your vehicle a little less appealing to a would be criminal.

We also recommend taking all valuables out of the vehicle completely, or at minimum locking them inside of the trunk.  Valuable items left in plain sight can make your vehicle a much more lucrative item to steal and more succeptible to being broken into as well.

The most important thing that we ask citizens to do is to be a "nosy neighbor" and help keep a sharp eye out for any kind of suspicious people or behavior.  We ask that citizens not hesitate in calling 911 anytime you observe someone hanging around in a parking lot; especially if you don't recognize them or know for a fact that they do not reside in the area.

Auto theft suspects sometimes walk into a target location to look for another vehicle to steal, but often times are mobile; driving other vehicles to the location, exiting and then stealing a car.  They are very proficient at what they do and do not have to be near a vehicle very long before gaining entry.

Please be vigilant and help us to police your neighborhood by quickly calling any suspicious behavior.  We need your assistance in attempting to prevent these crimes before they occur.

Sincerely,

Sgt. Parnell of the North Tryon Division
