CHICAGO (CBS) – A Chicago artist whose work has been featured around the world has been picked as the head of a major art project for the CTA.
WBBM’s Bernie Tafoya reports the CTA said a $1.3 million project to be overseen by Theaster Gates would be the largest public art project in the agency’s history.
The CTA Board has voted and approved Gates artwork to adorn a new $240 million terminal at the 95th Street Red Line station, which is set to be built next year. The Dan Ryan branch of the Red Line is currently undergoing a five-month reconstruction project.
“This new station will be a showcase destination, offering a modern, safe and pedestrian-friendly transit center with fewer delays and shorter travel times,” said CTA President Forrest Claypool. “It will also serve as a vibrant community anchor that will act as a catalyst for new businesses and economic development, creating jobs and complementing a 21st century rider experience.”
The CTA has earmarked $1 million for the design and installation of the artwork; $50,00 will go to community engagement, including public meetings; and the remaining $250,000 will be Gates’ fee.
The terminal should be completed by 2016.
