Re-drawing the Plans

In February, the Rugby community turned out to demonstrate their desire to improve safety and drainage issues on Overton Crossing, while keeping it a two-lane, residential street. Wain Gaskins, City Engineer, stated that he would submit a request that Overton Crossing be removed from the city's major road plan so that the project could be redrawn as a 2-lane rather than 4-lane improvement plan. He noted that this could be a long process, but that he would take steps necessary to begin the process.

What's happening now?

In April, City Council members were to vote on the annual budget, including projects from various city departments, such as Engineering. A spokesperson for Council member Rickey Peete advised that they were expecting to see some indication of what was going to happen with Overton Crossing in the budget proposal. To date, no information has appeared in public budget documents. Community members have tried to reach Mr. Gaskins by phone, but no messages have been returned. Wanda Martin, Office of Planning and Development, has not seen any updates, nor have others involved in the process.

What can we do?

We can continue to contact the City Engineer's office, as well as our Council representative, to ensure that they share information as soon as it becomes available. We can call or write letters to reinforce our strong desire to have a two-lane improvement plan designed and implemented as soon as possible.
