To be safe in your home some suggestions are:
1. Doors- Have dead bolt locks on your doors.
2. Windows- Lock all windows.
3. Lights- Leave an outside light on at night. At night a well lit house can expose individuals
attempting to conceal themselves and commit a criminal act. Please be considerate and insure that
your flood light is not shining in your neighbors bedroom window.
4. Home Appearance- Make sure you trim bushes and trees especially by windows
and doors. Do not leave items, like bikes or toys on lawn. Be sure that your lawn is mowed
before leaving on a vacation or that you have your lawn men scheduled to work.
A lawn well kept says you care!
5. Hiring Workers- When hiring workers for home repairs, lawn care, contractors etc.
if they have not been recommended to you by a friend or you do not know them, the
Sheriff's Office recommends you run a background check on them, the fee is usually
around $10.00. Some thieves have "disguised" themselves as workers.
6. When leaving for vacation- Ask a neighbor to pick up your mail, any papers in your
driveway , packages delivered at your front door and any business cards someone
may have left on your door or in your entry way. Sometimes thieves will put them there and
come back a few days later to see if they were picked up. If they have not they will know no one is home.
7. Timers- There are GE 'Smart Digital Timers' (placed in the wall switch). With the Smart Digital
Timer you can set your outside front door light on a timer to come on at a certain time at night.
There are also the dusk to dawn flood lights and timers for lamps in your home.
8. Alarm systems.
