METRO Hazardous Waste:
Plans are in the works for changes to the METRO Hazardous Waste program. Historically, they have conducted large, regional waste collections. Then, on other Saturdays, provide collection at traditional neighborhood clean-ups. The problem has been that the regional collections are extremely large, drawing huge numbers of people but not tying in at all with existing neighborhood or organization structures. Many people do not access this resource due. On the flip side, neighborhood associations have a great deal of difficulty scheduling a Haz Met truck at their event--especially in the spring when they are placed at the end of the waiting list.
METRO desires to make this program more accessible for residents. They want to divert even more hazardous materials from the land fill. They are looking at changes to the program beginning this spring.
One important question is capacity. METRO has only two trucks to collect waste. The standard is for them to bring one truck to a neighborhood clean-up and not do a turn around like a hauler would when a dumpster is full. They often leave a clean-up site early and, once they reach capacity, are gone for the day. This has created a great deal of difficulty as coordinators have been left alone to tell folks the clean-up ended early.
Last spring, Sabrina Freewynn (SEUL) and Marilee Tillstrom (HAND) met with Lee Bene, Jim Quinn, Scott Klag and Bryce Jacobson to discuss ways in which experienced clean-up coordinators can influence these changes. After this meeting, we feel that METRO began to understand the knowledge of neighborhood coordinators but have not tapped into this resource yet.
It is unknown at this time what route METRO plans to take with this program. Please contact METRO folks at the top of this list to give your input. It was suggested that people should write letters expecting a response. Also, share ideas and any response you get on the discussion group site.
Apparently, METRO has a program where they will pick up hazardous materials from seniors and people with disabilities. Please call the METRO hotline for additional information. Let us know the results if you try this.
