Fire Station 16 Opening
Our new fire station is scheduled to open in late December. An open house for the community will be held in January or February once the public art has been installed. Captain Bill Sargant is in charge of the station where a crew of four will be on duty 24 hours a day seven days a week. There will be three shifts of fire fighters who will work 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off duty. There is a nice community room that will be available for neighborhood use. The station will have a community bulletin board inside the lobby. Neighborhood children who wait for the bus nearby are also welcome to wait under the building overhangs or inside the lobby when the weather is soggy.

Zoo Lights Party - Fun for SHNA Friends and Families
On Wednesday, December 11, the Oregon Zoo opened its doors to neighborhood residents for its annual Zoo Lights celebration. About fifty neighbors enjoyed the sights and sounds of Christmas choirs and grandiose light displays on a brisk winter evening. Many new neighbors and wide-eyed children participated in a cookie exchange and festive celebration of neighborhood spirit. Thanks to all who participated!

NWNW Fundraising
Many thanks to the neighbors who contributed to our coalition office by purchasing a wreath or by donating cash to help make up the funding gap. Neighbors West - Northwest supports ten neighborhood associations in the northwest area, Sylvan-Highlands included. Only 75-80% of the funding for this 501 c (3) comes from the City of Portland. The remaining funds to operate the organization come from grants and fund raising efforts. Our neighborhood benefits greatly from the services provided by Anne Dufay, Administrative Assistant, David Allred, Land Use Planner, Preston Wong, Crime Prevention Specialist, and Mark Sieber, Executive Director. If you haven?’t had an opportunity to send in a contribution, there?’s still time. Contact Neighbors West -Northwest at 223-3331 or nwnw.org to help close the remaining $2,900 gap.
