When summer comes to Tucson, shade trees will make a big difference in the temperature inside a house and in energy bills. A grant from Tucson Electric Power allows Tucson area residents to receive two five-gallon-size trees for $6 each. Residents must be TEP customers and must agree to plant the trees on the east, west or south side of the home. Trees will be delivered to the home. Commonly available trees include desert willow and mesquite. The trees for Tucson program has been sponsored by Tucson Electric Power since 1993. Almost 50,000 trees have been distributed since the sponsorship began, according to the website. (By Joanna Eubank, Arizona Daily Star, Jan. 29, 2007)
