A group of representatives in the South Park area made a trip to Dallas recently to learn more of the weed and seed process. The purpose of Weed and Seed is to reduce violent and drug-related crime from designated high-crime neighborhoods across the Nation. Law enforcement and community policing represent the ?“weeding?” aspect of the strategy. Prevention, intervention, and treatment and neighborhood restoration represent the ?“seeding?” phase. Community policing is involved in both weeding and seeding activities and serves as a bridge between the two components.
The group met with several of the Dallas Weed & Seed neighborhoods and learned many of the techniques that were used in revitalizing their neighborhoods. The SPNA in conjunction with many of the other local businesses, organizations and schools hopes to begin implementation of the Weed & Seed strategy in the very near future. For more information on what Weed & Seed is about and how to participate you can go to the Department of Justice?’s website and read more about it.
