It was Wednesday, December 22, one day after the hearing with the Adjustments Committee. As Linda and I watched the many citizens lining up across the street to enjoy the beautiful solstice moon rising over the city, we considered the significance of our recent victory and the work that lies ahead.
It is clear the factors that drove Canterbury to pursue such an aggressive and unpopular project on the Upper Hall site will not abate. Developers will continue to pursue development of this and other sites in our neighborhood. Some of these developers are motivated solely by short-term profitability, not the long-term livability of our community. City Planning will continue to support aggressive development projects. These factors, combined with a less active neighborhood association, would likely result in the approval of a project similar to the Upper Hall Condo project we just defeated.
SWHRL?’s extraordinary effort in opposing the Upper Hall Condo project was the deciding factor in our successful appeal of the outrageous zoning adjustments granted to the developer. The turnout for the hearing, the petition drive, and the media coverage SWHRL was able to orchestrate were incredible.
We want to thank Knut Eie and the rest of the SWHRL board for their tireless efforts. We also urge our neighbors to become active members of SWHRL, as they need your support to continue the fight to maintain the livability of our great neighborhood.
